Research Grants

SEAC annually awards a small number of fieldwork grants for faculty, and pre-dissertation/dissertation research grants (which may include language training) for graduate students. Awards will be for up to $5,000.

We welcome proposals that address academic research projects in Southeast Asia, as well as those that address (or also address) course-development. Projects may be in any discipline and on any topic, but the link to Southeast Asia, the need for travel there, and the ability to conduct the project as described, should be clear.

Recipients must be faculty, researchers, or students at a SUNY or CUNY institution at the time of the research in question. Funds should be expended by Spring 2026 (though extensions may be possible).

Selection will be by a panel of SUNY and CUNY faculty.

To apply for a research grant, submit the following:

  • Research proposal (3-4 pages)

    • Briefly sketch the project as a whole; if these funds would support only one portion of the research, identify which part.

    • Address your preparation/skills to conduct the project as described, including requisite language facility, if applicable.

    • Note relevant prior experience in Southeast Asia (e.g., research, teaching, professional work).

    • Make sure the link with Southeast Asia, and the need for travel, is clear.

  • Budget, explaining any non-obvious expenses

    • List other funding for which you have applied (or can access) or will apply for this project.

  • Current CV

  • Explanation of prior engagement with and/or awards from SEAC

  • Graduate students only: transcript (unofficial is fine)

Application deadline: Friday, November 7, 2025. Awardees will be notified mid-November or by the end of November at the very latest.

Please be advised that grant disbursement may be on a reimbursement basis, requiring receipts.

Publishing Grants

SEAC will award approximately five grants of up to $1,000 each to support faculty publishing related to Southeast Asia and Southeast Asians, including in the diaspora.

Expenses covered may include, for instance, in-person or hybrid book, article, or book-proposal workshops; translation costs; publishing subventions; or open-access fees.

Recipients must be faculty, tenure-track or otherwise, or affiliated researchers at a SUNY or CUNY institution at the time of the publication-related work in question. Funds should be expended by the end of Spring 2026 (though extensions may be possible).

Selection will be by a panel of SUNY and CUNY faculty.

To apply for a publishing grant, submit the following:

  • Proposal (1-3 pages), including the current status of the project in question and how this award will help with publication. If your project’s relevance to Southeast Asia is not obvious, be sure to clarify

  • Budget, explaining any non-obvious expenses

  • List other funding for which you have applied (or can access) or will apply for publishing-related expenses (not including research-only grants along the way)

  • Identify any previous SEAC grants

  • Current CV

Application deadline: Friday, November 7, 2025. Awardees will be notified mid-November or by the end of November at the very latest.
