For Students

2023–24 Workshop and Field School

As part of the SUNY/CUNY SEAC initiative, we invite applications from faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students for the Inaugural SUNY/CUNY SEAC Workshop and Field School in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in January 2024.

Applications are due by 10 September 2023 at 5 pm ET.

Core research agenda

This academic year (2023-24), our theme is “Sites and Spaces of Mobilization.”

Papers for the workshop may address political or social mobilization in any area of Southeast Asia, from any disciplinary perspective. (Paper presentations are optional for undergraduate student attendees.)

For the field school, participants will explore emergent, creative scholarly approaches, including applied methods, to examine the work that ordinary people and marginalized communities do to carve out and sustain varied spaces of justice, peace, and solidarity, including across borders.

Eligibility

Faculty (including temporary, non-tenure track, tenure track, and tenured), graduate students (PhD, MA, and other), and undergraduate students at SUNY and CUNY enrolled in any discipline of study who are engaged in research or studies related to this year’s theme are eligible to apply.

Approximately twelve (12) participants will be selected.

Selected graduate students and undergraduate students will participate in:

  1. an online synchronous SUNY/CUNY orientation in the Fall semester

  2. a 3-day workshop in Chiang Mai, Thailand (6-8 January 2024)
